0. So where is The Acorn this week?

  • We did not have a meeting last week, and so last week's Acorn applies to this week!
  • Last week's Acorn is unchanged, and repeated for your convenience below.
  • If you hadn't gotten this email,. you should already know that you can go to https://www.oakcitysound.org/dbpage.php?pg=bboard whenever and read the latest Acorn. Do you have that URL in your favorites? If not, why not?

1. Notes for this week

  • We will not meet next Monday on Memorial Day, May 30. Our next meeting is Monday June 6 at our usual meeting place, Searstone Retirement Village, at 7pm.
  • Two of our guests from Monday May 13's special Guest Night returned for a second visit last evening May 23.: Steve McGehee and John Quick. Also, Ben Hansen would have been the 3rd returning guest except he had a conflict last night.  Thanks to all who invited their church choir friends. We are so glad to have new singers and friends in our group.
  • Attendance at the Afterglow last night was over 50%!  It's a great time., so why don't you come and join us?

2. Carol's Korner

  • Song List for our next Monday, June 6 to practice on your own at home. The site music library has all the scores and part-specific learning trax.
    • Prayer of the Children
    • Merry Christmas, Darling (Note: Please practice this on “loo” or “na” or a similar syllable that promotes connected lines of notes)
    • Hanukkah Song in a Major Key
    • Most Wonderful Time of the Year
    • Over the Rainbow
    • Ride the Chariot
    • Crazy
    • Yesterday
  • As always: Keep working on creating legato lines by singing into and through the open vowels and making the end of each syllable the beginning of the next syllable. As you get used to this concept, it will make a HUGE difference!

3. Future Notes

  • No change from last week.
  • Due to the construction at the front door at Searstone starting on June 6, parking at the front of the building will no longer be allowed. All must park at Lorraine Park area.

4. Long Range

  • July 25 at 7pm: Oak City Sound in concert at Searstone, Remember that Searstone provides our rehearsal space FOR FREE, in exchange for a concert here and there. Monday July 25 2022 at 7pm is one of those concert dates where we "earn our keep". It's an earlier than usual show-up time! There is a uniform requirement. See Events Page for details.
  • October / November: NSC District will hold this Fall's Convention at Asbury UMC Church at 6612 Creedmoor Rd, in Raleigh. Target date range is between mid-October and November 12, 2022. HCA/HOC Choruses in Durham are the hosting chapter. with Jason Kekas as the Convention Planner and Chairman.. Let Nic know if you are available to help as well. We are trying to make sure that the convention is NOT held on a Saturday when there is an NCSU home football game where we will be manning the concession stand.
  • Christmas Show:  Yes, you heard that right! We will be singing some Christmas Carols again this year.  No details yet but lots of discussion about where and when.  Maybe a formal concert? Perhaps we schedule some senior living places in December and perform at their places.  If they can't come to us, we will come to them! Just to put some context about it: we had 14 singers at our singouts in North Hills Shopping Center, while at the same time we were having only 10 or 11 at practice sessions! Everyone likes singouts in the public setting. Note that we will make every effort possible to schedule these for Monday evenings. We know your time during the Holiday season is precious, so to ask for another night is difficult. We hope you can keep your Monday evenings reserved for Oak City Sound throughout that season.
