  • The list of songs is what is expected to be covered at rehearsal. The order of the list has no significance to anything, so don’t try to read anything into it!

1. Notes for this week

  • Our next meeting is Monday June 13 at our usual meeting place, Searstone Retirement Village, at 7pm. Please fill out the Attendance Planner on the Member Home page.
  • Two of our guests from May 13's special Guest Night returned for a third visit this week on June 6.: Steve McGehee and John Quick
  • Also, Ben Hansen would have been the 3rd returning guest except he came down with COVID (very mild) and he self-quarantined this week. Meanwhile, Ben is downloading all the current rep so as to be off-paper as soon as possible. We all should be doing the same!
  • Bill Crismore was back for his eighth visit (or so).
  • This week's First time visitor was Vic Levand from Greenville NC. Vic is a veteran of NC Harmony Brigade, and we are very glad for his visit.
  • We are so glad to have so many new singers and friends in our group.
  • Attendance at the Afterglow this past Monday was great. We had some special patrons to whom we sang a couple of songs. It was interesting! (to say the least)  It's a great time., so why don't you come and join us?

2. Carol's Korner

  • Song List for our next Monday, June 13 to practice on your own at home. The site music library has all the scores and part-specific learning trax. The list of songs is what is expected to be covered at rehearsal. The order of the list has no significance to anything, so don’t try to read anything into it!
    • All I Want for Christmas is You
    • Jingle Bell Rock
    • Winter Wonderland
    • We Need A Little Christmas
    • Songs of Christmas
    • Almost Like Being in Love
    • Do You Hear the People Sing?
    • The Longest Time
    • Prayer of the Children (please be off the spots)
  • As always: Keep working on creating legato lines by singing into and through the open vowels and making the end of each syllable the beginning of the next syllable. As you get used to this concept, it will make a HUGE difference!
  • Along with this, you should develop your interpretational ability, which, for a chorus member, means using dynamic range to express the meanings of the phrases, and even to help delineate the phrases themselves. Longer duration notes, as defined in the context of the song, should have dynamic changes so as to convey the feeling of the phrase, plus maintain the forward direction of the phrasing, and not get mired in chord worship.

3. Future Notes

  • No change from last week.
  • Due to the construction at the front door at Searstone starting on June 6, parking at the front of the building will no longer be allowed. All must park at Lorraine Park area.

4. Long Range

  • July 25 at 7pm: Oak City Sound in concert at Searstone, Remember that Searstone provides our rehearsal space FOR FREE, in exchange for a concert here and there. Monday July 25 2022 at 7pm is one of those concert dates where we "earn our keep". It's an earlier than usual show-up time! There is a uniform requirement. See Events Page for details.
  • October 14 and 15:: NSC District will hold this Fall's Convention at Asbury UMC Church at 6612 Creedmoor Rd, in Raleigh. HCA/HOC Choruses in Durham are the hosting chapter. with Jason Kekas as the Convention Planner and Chairman.. Let Nic know if you are available to help as well. We are trying to make sure that the convention is NOT held on a Saturday when there is an NCSU home football game where we will be manning the concession stand.
  • Christmas Show:  Yes, you heard that right! We will be singing some Christmas Carols again this year.  No details yet but lots of discussion about where and when.  Maybe a formal concert? Perhaps we schedule some senior living places in December and perform at their places.  If they can't come to us, we will come to them! Just to put some context about it: we had 14 singers at our singouts in North Hills Shopping Center, while at the same time we were having only 10 or 11 at practice sessions! Everyone likes singouts in the public setting. Note that we will make every effort possible to schedule these for Monday evenings. We know your time during the Holiday season is precious, so to ask for another night is difficult. We hope you can keep your Monday evenings reserved for Oak City Sound throughout that season.
